Description

Session Goal:

The primary goal of this session was to enhance the integration of LaTeX tables within Jupyter Notebooks, focusing on displaying data related to violent conflicts in Africa.

Key Activities:

  • LaTeX Table Example: Provided a structured LaTeX code template for summarizing violent conflicts in Africa, detailing countries, time periods, fatal victims, and displaced persons.
  • Displaying LaTeX in Jupyter: Explored methods to render LaTeX tables in Jupyter Notebooks using the IPython display module.
  • Longtable for Multi-page Tables: Implemented the longtable package to handle multi-page tables in Jupyter Notebooks.
  • Using LaTeX tabular Environment: Corrected and demonstrated the use of the LaTeX tabular environment for creating tables in Jupyter.
  • Markdown Table Insertion: Provided guidance on inserting tables in Jupyter Notebook Markdown cells.

Achievements:

  • Successfully demonstrated the integration of LaTeX tables in Jupyter Notebooks using various methods.
  • Clarified the limitations of UCDP and ACLED data in violence analysis, recognizing the potential for incomplete information.

Pending Tasks:

  • Further exploration of alternative data sources to complement UCDP and ACLED data for a more comprehensive analysis of violence in Africa.
