Description
Session Goal
Improve portability and maintainability of a Python knowledge base / Retrieval UI system, while also resolving related operational blockers in file handling and Quartz deployment.
Key Activities
- Refactored a monolithic Python application into clearer modules with separated responsibilities:
kb.pyfor file preparation and discoveryretrieval.pyfor indexing and queryingmain.pyfor UI orchestration
- Decoupled knowledge base configuration from code to make the system more portable and easier to reuse without major architectural changes.
- Reviewed and corrected
pathlibusage for parent-directory navigation and directory existence checks. - Investigated ZIP extraction issues, including archive integrity checks and recovery approaches for damaged archives.
- Documented a Python workflow for merging multiple JSON files into a single output file.
- Resolved a Quartz deployment issue tied to GitHub Pages configuration, restoring successful build and deploy behavior.
- Summarized overall progress and remaining work across Retrieval UI and Quartz.
Achievements
- The monolith was successfully partitioned into three responsibility-focused files without breaking core functionality.
- The deployment blocker for Quartz was identified and fixed, allowing the site to build and deploy again.
- Practical troubleshooting guidance was established for path handling, ZIP recovery, and JSON merging tasks.
- The work clarified a direction for future portability improvements: keep configuration externalized while avoiding unnecessary architectural churn.
Pending Tasks
- Continue refining the Retrieval UI architecture and integration points.
- Validate the refactored knowledge base flow end-to-end in real usage.
- Apply the portability pattern to additional configuration or file-discovery logic if needed.
- Monitor Quartz deployment stability after the GitHub Pages fix.
