Description

Session Goal

Align the diagnostics generation pipeline with the CLI and benchmark expectations for the HGB thesis run, while closing the remaining artifact gap around distribution-compression reporting.

Key Activities

  • Diagnosed a CLI-to-function signature mismatch in build_diagnostics, where the CLI was passing max_scatter_points but the function signature did not accept it.
  • Planned a patch to src/eph_income/diagnostics.py to restore compatibility and unblock diagnostics generation.
  • Identified additional missing guard parameters (min_distribution_rows, min_decile_points) and proposed adding them to the function signature as compatibility placeholders.
  • Reviewed the HGB benchmark diagnostics state and confirmed that plots and skip-reason logging were already in place.
  • Investigated the missing distribution_compression_summary.[[csv]] artifact and defined a schema/validation approach to generate it consistently from archived predictions.
  • Corrected a column-name mismatch in the income-decile diagnostics workflow, noting that the CSV uses mae and n rather than abs_error_mean and row_count.
  • Interpreted the benchmark behavior as stable overall, with systematic tail bias: underprediction at high incomes and overprediction at low incomes.

Achievements

  • Clarified the root cause of the diagnostics failure: interface drift between CLI arguments and the diagnostics builder function.
  • Established the exact compatibility patch needed to restore diagnostics execution without retraining.
  • Defined the remaining thesis-ready artifact to produce: distribution_compression_summary.[[csv]].
  • Reconciled schema expectations for the compressed-distribution summary and the income-decile diagnostics outputs.
  • Confirmed the benchmark’s qualitative diagnostic signal, including distributional compression and tail-error structure.

Pending Tasks

  • Apply the build_diagnostics() signature patch and validate with linting, compilation, and pytest.
  • Regenerate diagnostics on the benchmark run without retraining.
  • Implement and verify distribution_compression_summary.[[csv]] generation.
  • Run the post-hoc validation script and thesis diagnostics check to ensure registry/output alignment.
