Session Goal

Design and unblock a thesis-oriented OLS diagnostics workflow, centered on a compact notebook suite for feature blocks, temporal/geographic effects, residual analysis, and sensitivity checks, while resolving backend contract mismatches that prevented the new diagnostics structure from being recognized.

Key Activities

  • Proposed a six-notebook OLS diagnostics architecture covering feature selection, temporal effects, geographic effects, placebo/sensitivity analysis, equation auditing, and residual diagnostics.
  • Planned a standalone 11_ols_feature_blocks.ipynb with a reusable run loader, metrics table, incremental plots, compression-oriented reporting, and a final diagnostics cell.
  • Described notebook generation behavior that can discover the latest ols_* artifacts under reports/runs/ when executed in the repository.
  • Confirmed availability of the notebook artifact for download, indicating the analysis scaffold was produced and handed off.
  • Reframed the backend failure as a schema/contract mismatch: the new OLS diagnostics taxonomy was not yet recognized by diagnostics_registry.py.
  • Identified the immediate build issue as a missing YAML/profile alignment for make thesis-ols, and recommended the minimal fix of adding the already-used profile rather than redesigning the workflow.
  • Prepared a registry-level fix by extending DIAGNOSTICS_PROFILES with the new feature-family study profiles using lightweight defaults, without changing diagnostics.py.

Achievements

  • Established a clear, thesis-oriented diagnostics notebook roadmap.
  • Produced a reusable notebook scaffold for OLS feature-block analysis.
  • Isolated the backend failure to registry/profile normalization rather than model training or OLS logic.

  • If needed, propagate the new diagnostics taxonomy consistently across any remaining registry or reporting surfaces.
