Session Goal

Refine the OLS thesis workflow so benchmark targets, temporal feature validation, and notebook artifact handling all work consistently across the updated feature-contract and coefficient-export pipeline.

Key Activities

  • Updated the Makefile to preserve legacy benchmark targets while adding a new pyramid-aware OLS benchmark target and clearer help text.
  • Adjusted the thesis feature-block workflow so make thesis-ols runs the new target set and remains compatible with the revised benchmark orchestration.
  • Diagnosed a backend validation failure in feature_contract.yaml caused by a strict enum mismatch for temporal features.
  • Proposed a contract-safe fix: restore temporal_features.decision: include_in_baseline and move methodological intent into non-validated fields such as thesis_policy and notes.
  • Identified and patched a pandas export bug where drop_duplicates crashed on list-valued metadata in coefficient artifacts by serializing list/dict cells before deduplication and CSV writing.
  • Fixed notebook handling of run_id by introducing an upsert-style helper that avoids inserting duplicate columns and preserves backend-provided metadata.
  • Clarified the role of notebook 15 as an econometric interpretation notebook focused on the estimated equation, design-matrix semantics, coefficient interpretation, and stability checks rather than performance visualization.
  • Flagged a methodological warning: an extremely negative CV score suggests possible design-matrix instability after feature-type migration, requiring follow-up diagnostics.

Achievements

  • Makefile parses successfully after the benchmark-target revision.
  • Legacy benchmark behavior is preserved while enabling the new pyramid-sensitive OLS path.
  • The temporal feature validation issue is understood as a schema/enum contract problem rather than a backend logic failure.
  • Coefficient export is now more robust against list/dict metadata serialization issues.

  • Validate the new notebook 15 outputs (T1-T14) against the intended econometric interpretation workflow.
