Session Goal

Reconstruct a durable research workflow for project dossier work by separating the memo architecture into canonical documents and clarifying the source inventory needed for geocoded investment/project data.

Key Activities

  • Defined a two-document structure for experimental design and treatment construction so the memo boundary is explicit and reusable.
  • Split the research workflow into:
    • a canonical note for the empirical experiment and regression pipeline,
    • a canonical note for the project classification / annotation protocol.
  • Drafted a standalone English Markdown memo for Module A, focused on experimental design and regression pipeline export.
  • Planned Module B as a parallel protocol document with schema labels, rules, examples, workflow steps, audit checks, and unresolved decisions.
  • Reframed the data work as a Module C source-inventory problem, organizing candidate datasets into four buckets:
    • directly usable geocoded project data,
    • project registries / APIs,
    • aid-flow databases,
    • enrichment-only sources.
  • Assessed update feasibility for China and World Bank project geocoding, concluding that China is likely refreshable via newer AidData releases, while World Bank remains constrained by the official API and the older geocoded dataset.

Achievements

  • Established a clearer document architecture for the research workflow, reducing ambiguity between experiment design and treatment-definition notes.
  • Completed an English Markdown export for Module A.
  • Clarified that World Bank geolocation updates are the main technical bottleneck.
  • Identified a plausible update path for China using AidData 2000-2023 releases.

  • Draft Module B as a standalone protocol with concrete schema, examples, and audit rules.
  • Build the Module C source inventory and prioritize datasets by usability for Africa and Asia.
